Our School

Each day is unique and no child is compelled to participate in every activity, but our day is organized around a flexible schedule.

Every child is warmly greeted and invited to one of several activity centers to help them separate and ease into their school day.

Because we have a large staff, we are all able to tend to the wants and needs of the children. Except for two circle times for the entire class, we work in small groups on a variety of activities, and we never deprive a child of individual attention when it is needed.

Small group activities include: sand and water play, baking and cooking, feeding our birds, fish and rabbit, Montessori materials, reading stories, planting, play-doh, and special projects for holidays.

Art activities include: easel painting, collage, water colors, scissor cutting and clay. Play areas offer the opportunity to develop large motor skills on our climbing equipment, riding toys, and merry-go-round.

Our Graduates

Among the most important responsibilities of our preschool are preparation for kindergarten and placement of our graduates in ongoing schools. We are very proud of the children’s success in being accepted at selective schools.

Their success is due to several factors, of which their Nature, that is, being born bright, is the most important, and Nurture, from VPC, is the icing on the cake. As far as the VPC’s contribution is concerned, our staff focuses on sending forth exceptionally well-prepared children. Directors of the ongoing schools are delighted. Kindergarten teachers frequently tell us how pleased they are with our children. They see that our VPC grads are very advanced socially and cognitively.

Next, our Kindergarten/Preschool Information Night for our graduating preschoolers prepares parents for the rigors of the school placement process. We discuss school options, private, public and gifted programs, and testing. We invite speakers to represent various schools, in order to familiarize parents with a broad spectrum of the fine schools that are out there. We also discuss the importance of the interview process for both the child and the parents. All of this is designed to enable parents go about the application process in a more realistic, efficient, and informed manner.

Almost all private schools now require the ERB test as part of the application process. To make testing as stress-free as possible for children and parents, we offer the ERBs in the familiar, friendly setting of the VPC. The children not only feel at home in the testing site, but also with the tester, whom they get to know as the “Game lady”.

Jeff, who knows and works with all the children, writes the recommendation letters, in which he, in consultation with classroom teachers, reveals the shining star within each applicant.

Dear Suzette, Jeff, Brunie and all at VPC,

We are delighted to inform you that Jake has been accepted into the Hunter College Elementary School for the 2010-2011 school year.

We would like to take this opportunity to offer our heartfelt thanks to all at VPC for always providing Jake with a positive and supportive educational environment. Everyone at VPC has always given Jake the freedom to be himself and helped to nurture his confidence to explore and learn about the world around him. We are certain that Jake’s experiences at VPC have contributed significantly to his emotional and intellectual development and helped to inspire in him both a lifelong love of learning and a genuine sense of compassion and empathy for those around him.

We are fully confident that this foundation will provide him with all of the tools necessary for him to make a successful transition into kindergarten and beyond, and we cannot thank all of you enough for the love, kindness and support you have shown Jake and all of the other children lucky enough to attend preschool at VPC.
